Vanessa
Stacey grew up in Central Otago in New Zealand has been acting since she
was 7 years old. Her father was working as a stuntman, and Vanessa and
her older brother Martin Stacey got work as background extras.
The first film
she played in was “Battle Truck”, which was made in 1982. She also
played in films like “Willow” (1988), “Heavenly Creatures” (1994) and
“The Frighteners” (1996).
Vanessa was
member of many different school choirs, and at the age of 16 she was in
a band, which made several albums. She started singing at nightclubs at
the age of 17, but when Vanessa turned 20 years of age, she joined
Hagley Theatre Company. There she was a one of the core cast for 2
years, and she played in many different plays like productions from
“Animal Farm” and “The Cherry Orchard”. Vanessa also acted in some of
Chekov’s and Christopher Deranger’s plays.
It was around
this time Vanessa gained her diploma in Jazz Theory and Performance, and
she toured all around in New Zealand with lots of different Jazz and
Blues bands. She also opened a saloon called “Absolutely Fabulous Hair
Design”, but it was closed just 8 months after it was opened. This was
because she wanted to act full time instead, and she started on Drama
School.
In 1996 she moved
to Wellington and started as a free lance actor. Just 3 weeks after her
arrival in Wellington, she got a leading role in the play “The Young And
Hungry Festival”. Afters this role, she was asked to write and direct a
new play, and this became to the play “Work in Progress”. She finished
it within 3 weeks, and this play was shown over 3 seasons!
In 1997 Vanessa
spent her time working around Wellington, and this year she got a guest
spot on NZ TV’s live show called “Pulp Comedy”.
In 1998 Vanessa
Stacey got a guest appearance in Cloud 9’s series called “The Tribe” She
was going to play “Alice” in episode 32 of series 1. Later she was asked
to be a regular character in “The Tribe”. At first she turned it down
due to study, but when she was offered core cast, she accepted the offer
and returned as “Alice” in series 2 and 3, and later in episode 24 and
26 in series 5.
In 2001 the Tribe
cd “Abe Messiah” came out. Vanessa Stacey had one of the main backing
vocals on the title tracks “Abe Messiah”, “Beep Beep” and “Banging The
Drum”. Her favourite song in this album is “Beep Beep”.
This year Vanessa
played a role in “The Core” a production which was broadcasted on
Channel 5. She also created a character for an 8 minute long stand-up
comedy for the Channel 5 Road Show. Later she got a role in the
children’s television show called “Jay Jay The Jet Plane”. In this show
Vanessa played the character named Brenda Blue, who was working as a
mechanic.
In December the
same year Vanessa had a voiceover in the great trilogy “The Lord Of The
Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring”. She also played one of the hobbits
in Bilbo’s party, but this scene was never a part of the movie. In the
third movie of the trilogy “The Lord Of The Rings: Return Of The King”,
she played a role as well, but this time as human. All the scenes, in
which Vanessa played, were crowded scenes, so it may be a bit difficult
to find her.
Since then
Vanessa Stacey has worked with part-time teaching, as well as working as
a hairdresser in London. She has also been directing some programs for
UK Television, and hopefully she will soon move back to New Zealand.
